Introduction

A team clearing the ground in preparation for a new construction project includes demolition workers. Before demolishing or dismantling the unsafe or out-of-date buildings and structures, they strip out fittings, remove hazardous chemicals, and salvage anything that can be put to use using anything from simple hand tools to massive plant and machinery.

Demolition Operative

Typical Tasks

A demolition operative's employment entails the following responsibilities:

  • Removing fixtures and appliances
  • Removing windows and doors
  • Removing and disassembling roof components
  • Removing steel supports
  • You may operate demolition breakers, oxy/fuel cutting equipment, and other heavy plant & machinery after completing the necessary training.
  • Getting a building ready for destruction
  • Removing any remaining dangerous substances safely
  • Always adhering to strict environmental, health, and safety regulations

Qualifications We Offer

Although there are no formal requirements to work as a demolition operative, there are a number of paths you might take to get there. You can finish an apprenticeship or apply for a job directly with an employer.

People that are passionate, willing to learn, and obedient are more in demand by employers in the demolition industry.

To work on a demolition site, you must have a Certificate of Competence in Demolition Operations (CCDO) card.

You can advance to become an advanced demolition operative with further education and experience.

You might eventually advance to a managerial or supervisory position and control the demolition site's operations.

On the CCDO career ladder, a person who starts at the bottom would advance as follows:

  • CCDO labourer
  • CCDO apprentice
  • CCDO demolition refurbishment operative
  • CCDO advanced demolition operative
  • CCDO chargehand
  • CCDO site supervisor
  • CCDO demolition site manager
