Bricklayer

Bricklayers are responsible for setting out buildings by laying bricks, and pre-cut stone, concrete blocks and other types of building blocks in mortar in accordance with approved house building plans. They build and repair walls, chimney stacks, tunnel linings and decorative work such as archways. They might also refurbish brickwork and masonry on restoration projects and repair foundations. Bricklayers work outdoors and may have to work at heights or in tunnels and shafts. They usually work in teams. You can work on a range of projects, from creating a single conservatory to building brand new homes.

• Measuring the work area and setting out the first rows of bricks (courses) and the damp course, working from plans and specifications. 

• Mixing mortar by hand or with a mechanical mixer 

• Laying the bricks on top of each other and applying the mortar with a trowel 

• Construct arches and ornamental brickwork

• Shaping and trimming bricks using hammers, chisels and power tools 

• Checking that courses are straight using spirit levels and plumb lines 

• Seal foundations with damp-resistant materials, occassionally repair and maintain clay bricks, cement blocks/bricks and related structure

You'll work on a particular section of a building in a team alongside other bricklayers 

• Qualified with experience bricklayers can earn in the region of £30,000-£40,000 and up to £48,000.
