Apprentice and Trainee Opportunities at Barratt

Learn a trade and earn at the same time with our Apprenticeship and Trainee programmes at Barratt. Within our award winning Barratt Academy we run a number of programmes for Apprentices and Trainees to create the very best skills learning environment for you.

By combining professional training both on-site and in the classroom, our programmes allow you to gain industry recognised qualifications whilst at the same time building connections with experienced professionals and people with specialist technical knowledge. Furthermore, your development will be overseen individually by one of our own Directors, showing you just how seriously we take supporting your training.

Why choose between a university/college education or paid employment – when you can have the best of both worlds, and a little bit more besides? We know our approach works because so many of our Managers and Directors started their careers as an Apprentice or Trainee and are still with us today; including our Chief Operating Officer. It’s not just us who thinks this. We’ve been named in the Top 100 Apprentice Employers list for 3 years, and this year, we were crowned overall winner in the Macro Employer category at the National Apprenticeship Awards.

Trade Apprenticeships

You’ve got the passion, you’ve got the ambition and you’ve got the determination to succeed. What you need now is the opportunity to shine. And we’ve got just the thing. Why choose between a university/college education, or paid employment – when you can have the best of both worlds, and a little bit more besides? From the day you start your career with Barratt you can be assured that you will be given every opportunity to progress.  Here at Barratt we will go beyond the standard S/NVQ Syllabus and we will take a personal interest in your development.

Intermediate Trade Apprenticeship – Level 2

* Bricklayer * Carpenter/Joiner * Plumber * Electrician * Maintenance Operative

During this programme you will combine college with your practical learning on site to achieve your Level 2 S/NVQ and diploma qualifications as well as a valuable trade.

Want to see how far you can go? If you are ambitious as we hope you are you may want to progress. Our Advanced Apprenticeship and Barratt Academy can help you do this.

Advanced Trade Apprenticeship – Level 3

* Bricklayer * Carpenter/Joiner * Plumber * Electrician

Take your trade training to another level by continuing your study and on-site training for a further year (or two years in Scotland and Plumbing / Electrical trades).

Completing the Programme

When you have completed your Apprenticeship you’ve got a number of options. You might work for one of our subcontractors, set yourself up as self-employed or in some areas of the country, work for us permanently as a qualified trades person. You might want to progress into a career in Site Management on our Barratt Academy Assistant Site Manager Programme and Site Manager Programmes to gain your S/NVQ Level 4 and 5, or if you’d prefer a more academic route, join our Foundation Degree Programme run in partnership with Sheffield Hallam University.

So, you will have the option to complete a degree at a later date if you decide that route might be right for you. You’ll still have the benefits of earning and learning at work but will be released from the business for 4 x 1-week teaching blocks each year. Each of these programmes are structured and designed to prepare you for the big job of managing one of our developments.

Commercial and Technical Apprentices and Trainees

Starting in September each year, our apprentice and trainee programmes of individually tailored development will give you the skills and professional qualifications to enjoy a career that could take you from Trainee right up to Director level. Once accepted, you'll join on a permanent contract and commence a structured training programme which includes on-the-job modules to learn the technical elements of the role.

You’ll also attend a number of in-house classroom modules with other apprentices and trainees, as well as spending time in other departments in order to turn you into a true expert in your field, allowing you to move forward with Barratt to have an exciting and rewarding career.

If you’re a school leaver, you’ll join on a 2-year apprenticeship programme. As well as gaining practical knowledge, you will be combining on-the-job experience with further study via day or block release at a local college, working towards an NVQ or SVQ Level 3 and a BTEC in a Contracting Operations Pathway to gain your Advanced Apprenticeship Framework through the CITB; the Sector Skills Council for Construction.

If you already hold, a BTEC Level 3 in a Construction related subject, HNC, HND, degree or higher, you’ll join on a 1-year programme as a trainee. We’ll support and fund your professional development, whether that’s through day release at college or through CPD.

During your programme you can expect:

  • A dedicated coach, who will work with you day-to-day, giving you the technical knowledge you need
  • Regular reviews and feedback from a manager, showing how valued you are
  • ‘Real’ opportunities for you to get involved and demonstrate your ability

What do the departments do?

Technical

Our technical teams are involved in all aspects of housing design and innovation. We have a variety of developments across the UK, many of them brownfield and all of them with unique problems to solve

Commercial

Our commercial teams are involved in everything to do with cost-effective building, including quantity surveying, estimating, procurement and material buying.

How to apply

Our programmes are open to ambitious people aged 16+. We've put a lot into them, and we expect a lot in return, so you must be prepared to commit to hard work and study. Equally important is your potential and personality, because we're looking for the very best talent to develop. So, bearing in mind the studying you'll have to do and responsibility we'll give you, you'll need to be ambitious with plenty of energy and initiative.

Applying for the Trade Apprentice Programme

For our trade apprentices, there's a lot of working outside, helping build houses while learning your trade, so you'll need to be good with your hands and happy to work in all weathers. For any of our apprentice vacancies, there's plenty of studying to be done too, so you'll need to be willing to continue your learning in an exciting and challenging environment. For our apprenticeship programmes you'll need to hold (or will hold) GSCEs or A-Levels. If you want to train as a plumber or electrician you'll need to have grade C or above in GCSE Maths and English.

Applying for the Commercial and Technical Apprentice Programme

To join our Commercial or Technical team as an Apprentice we’re looking for hardworking and ambitious educational ‘achievers’ with strong commitment as further study will play an important part of your apprenticeship.

You’ll need to have a minimum of five GCSEs (including Maths and English grades A-C). You might also have A-Levels. Throughout your apprenticeship, you’ll interact with a wide range of people, so it’s essential that you possess excellent communication skills. You’ll also need the ability to deal effectively with numbers.

Applying for the Commercial and Technical Trainee Programme

To join our Commercial or Technical team as a Trainee you will need five GCSEs (A-C grade) as a minimum, plus a higher level qualification such as a BTEC Level 3 in a Construction related subject, or a HNC, HND or Degree.

Equally important to qualifications is your potential and personality, because you’ll be working with lots of different people; on-site and in offices and you’ll be given a lot of responsibility. You’ll also need to be ambitious with plenty of energy and initiative.

Our apprenticeship programme is run in partnership with CITB, the Sector Skills Council for Construction. As part of our selection process, in addition to submitting your application with us, you’ll also need to register with CITB.  You can do this any time of year, so if you've not yet registered through CITB, visitwww.citb.co.uk/apprenticeships.

Or to go direct to the application form, visitwww.citb.co.uk/bconstructive/citb-apprenticeships/bconstructive-application-form/.

We advertise our Apprentice and Trainee vacancies and accept online applications during the spring and summer months ready to commence employment in September. You will be able to apply for next year’s programme from 2nd March 2015 onwards. In the meantime, register your details on the Barratt careers website and subscribe to email alerts, so you’ll be the first to know when the vacancies go live.

Foundation Degree Programme

A great opportunity for those who are looking for an alternative start for their career rather than full-time Higher Education. We’ve collaborated with Sheffield Hallam University to offer a bespoke Foundation Degree which provides a unique opportunity for you to develop the qualities and skills you’ll need to excel in your career in the house-building industry.

You’ll join as Trainee Assistant Site Manager, giving you hands-on site experience from day one. You’ll attend 4 x 1-week teaching blocks at Sheffield Hallam University (SHU) each year; achieving the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) and Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) accredited Foundation Degree in Residential Development and Construction after three years, with the option to top-up to a full BSc (Hons) Degree over a further 18 months.

The programme starts with an induction in October each year, with teaching at Sheffield Hallam commencing the following January. The course focuses on the principles of housebuilding; skills and knowledge of residential construction techniques and their practical use including the legal and contractual areas of construction.

These areas are further developed in the work place, enabling you to gain a sound technical and academic education to further your career in the housebuilding industry. To help you on your way, you'll receive dedicated coaching from your Site Manager, and personal mentoring from a Construction Director or Manager.

Key features include:

  • Payment of tuition fees
  • Tailored teaching to compliment workplace learning
  • 4 x 1-week residential release from site for block teaching each year
  • A Barratt Construction Director or Manager as your mentor
  • A great salary plus additional incentives and generous benefits

Alongside the CIOB and RICS accredited Foundation Degree, you’ll take up the role of Trainee Assistant Site Manager where you’ll develop an ability to co-ordinate trades, direct labour and materials in order to meet a highly challenging schedule on time, and within budget. You’ll be supported in your development by your own Barratt mentor who will help you to apply your learning to practice.

After three years you’ll achieve the Foundation Degree in Residential Development and Construction and have the option to continue for a further 18 months to top-up to the BSc (Hons) Degree.

After the first two years we anticipate that you will be appointed as an Assistant Site Manager. Candidates with high potential will progress to complete the BSc (Hons) Degree and be ready to take on a Site Manager role upon completion of the programme.

Programme Detail

The academic teaching is tailor-made for Barratt Developments employees and is designed to complement and enhance your work-based learning. Many of the case studies that you’ll cover will be Barratt Developments that some of you will be working on. Look at the Barratt website for further information about the Foundation Degree module detail.

How to apply

To be considered you must have the potential to focus on customer expectation and commercial needs, as well as having an understanding of the level of commitment required from you to successfully manage working on site alongside furthering your education.

You’ll need to meet the following course entry requirements:

Typically you need one A-level and four GCSE Grade C or above including Maths and English, or one of the following:

  • BTEC national certificate or diploma in building, construction or civil engineering
  • Advanced diploma in construction or built environment
  • Other access or foundation course qualifications

However, the most important thing you'll bring to our business is your personal qualities. We don't expect everyone to be the same, far from it. We value diversity. But we do look for graduates who can demonstrate the qualities that will help them succeed. The experience you bring could be drawn from hobbies, study, part-time work, volunteering or even socialising and family life. Think carefully about how you match up.

We advertise our Foundation Degree places and accept online applications during February and March each year ready to commence employment in September. You will be able to apply for next year’s programme from 2nd February 2015 onwards. In the meantime, register your details on the Barratt website and subscribe to email alerts, so you’ll be the first to know when the vacancies go live.

Remember, selection is a two-way process. We want to find out more about you. But it’s equally important you find out about us too. For more information about the programme, visit www.barrattfuturetalent.co.uk.

Undergraduate Placement Programme

Aimed at students in the penultimate year of an undergraduate degree, these paid placements allow you to get to know our business and gain experience on real-life projects.  It’s a chance to put your knowledge into practice and bring your learning to life.

The time you spend with one of Britain’s leading housebuilders will boost your CV and help you make an informed choice about which career path to follow. If all goes well, we’ll encourage you to apply for a place on our graduate development programme – and fast-track you through the process.

Our programmes start in July each year running for 12 months, based in offices across the country. The programmes offer a realistic, stretching and highly enjoyable introduction to one of the UK’s most competitive industry sectors. You’ll start by completing six one-week placements in different areas to help you build a bigger picture of our business. For the remainder of the placement, you’ll specialise in your chosen department, where you’ll be given more responsibility.

Placements

Throughout the programme, you will partake in rotations across the following areas; Land & Planning, Commercial, Finance, Sales, Construction and Technical. You’ll have a dedicated coach, who will work with you day to day, making sure you have the technical knowledge you need to do a good job.  There will be plenty of opportunities to get involved and show us what you can do. Regular reviews and feedback from a manager will help you monitor your progress.

We understand that the transition from student life to full-time work can be daunting. That's why we’ll appoint a buddy for you – a current or recent graduate trainee, who will show you the ropes and answer any questions.

How to apply

Our emphasis is on your future potential rather than experience you’ve gained to date. Placements are all about helping you develop the technical, commercial and personal skills that will ensure your long-term success.  That said, there are a few basic requirements, and you must be able to work legally in the UK.

Built Environment Placements. You’ll need to be in the penultimate year of a degree such as Construction Management, Civil Engineering, Quantity Surveying, Architectural Technology, Building Surveying or another discipline related to the built environment.

Marketing or HR Placements. You’ll need to be in the penultimate year of a degree related to Business, Marketing or HR.  Being able to demonstrate a strong interest in HR or marketing and an understanding of the construction industry would be an advantage.

However, the most important thing you’ll bring is your personal qualities. We don’t expect everyone to be the same, far from it. We value diversity, but we do look for undergraduates who can demonstrate the qualities that will help them succeed. The experience you bring could be drawn from hobbies, study, part-time work, volunteering or even socialising and family life. Think carefully about how you match up.

As a first step, visit the careers website and apply. Vacancies are open until mid-February each year, ready to start in July. Remember, selection is a two-way process. We want to find out more about you. But it’s equally important you find out about us too. For more information about the programmes, visit www.barrattfuturetalent.co.uk.

Graduate Programmes

While our business is certainly about building homes, for our graduates, the real focus is on building the business: in gaining the commercial know-how, decision-making skills and leadership ability to take a successful business to even higher levels of performance.

Whatever we build, we build to last. So during your programme you can expect to gain valuable skills that will help you develop a long and successful career. You'll be far more than just another graduate – in fact we'll take a personal interest in your progress, so get ready to be in the spotlight!

Accelerated Programmes

If you’re sure about your future career direction, one of our Accelerated Programmes are ideal.  Lasting just 12 months, they enable you to get started in a real job in either Sales or Construction.

Accelerated Sales Programme

Aimed at the Sales Managers and even Sales Directors of the future, this fast-moving programme gives you everything you need to achieve your ambitions.  In just 12 months you’ll be a fully qualified Sales Adviser with your own site and On Target Earnings in the region of £30,000. What’s more, you will have acquired a nationally recognised professional qualification. Our structured learning and development programme is accredited by the Institute of Sales and Marketing Management – a first in the housebuilding industry.

Accelerated Construction Programme

Our programme, accredited by the CITB (Construction Industry Training Board) leads to appointment as a fully qualified Assistant Site Manager in just 12 months. You'll be learning at the leading edge: we’re breaking new ground with a range of innovative projects nationwide. We pride ourselves on workmanship and have secured more NHBC (National House Building Council) awards than any other house builder. Your construction management skills, at site level and above, will ensure this excellent track-record is maintained.

ASPIRE Programme

Our ASPIRE Programme runs over two years and gives you a broader foundation on which to build your career and become a future leader. You’ll start with six rotations, before you specialise in year two. Open to graduates of all disciplines, the ASPIRE Programme is a great way to explore both our business and your own talents, with mentorship to help you agree the most suitable part of the business for you. We’ll challenge and stretch you, but it’s up to you to make the most of this intensive learning opportunity. To help you on your way, you'll have a personal coach, and mentoring from a Managing Director. There’s also plenty of support to study for professional qualifications awarded by industry bodies such as CIMA, CIOB and RICS.

Year one consists of six two-month placements on rotation, designed to give an all-round insight into our business. At the same time, formal development modules will focus on leadership and project management skills.

Year two is a chance to specialise in your chosen area. The projects are longer, the challenges greater, the experience more focused and intense.  You’ll be supported with training in vital leadership skills such as communication, presentation, motivation and performance management.

We were ranked first in the Construction and Property Sector in the Job Crowd’s ‘Top Companies for Graduates to Work for’ list of 2014/15.

How to apply

Our emphasis is on your future potential rather than experience you've gained to date. You have to have a minimum 2:2 degree for the ASPIRE programme. For the Accelerated programme, we will accept students with related A-Levels and a HND if they bring related experience and an exceptional application. If your studies are related to the built environment, so much the better, but if you can demonstrate a passion for our business, we’re ready to listen. For Accelerated Programmes, you'll also need a clear understanding of sales or construction and how you want your career to develop.

You’ll also need a full driving licence, be willing and able to travel and relocate, and have the right to work permanently and legally in the UK. Think carefully about how you match up.

As a first step, visit the careers website and apply. Vacancies are open until mid-February each year, ready to start in September. Remember, selection is a two-way process. We want to find out more about you. But it’s equally important you find out about us too. For more information about the programmes, visit www.barrattfuturetalent.co.uk.

It can offer the chance to be involved in everything from finding the right land through to adding those finishing touches that will turn our houses into homes. Along the way, you'll be able to connect with a wide range of people - experts who can help you build your network and achieve your goals. Before long, everyone here will know your name. And you'll know exactly where you want to take your career next.
