Job: Technical Manager

About my job

What does your department do?

The Technical department gets involved in many areas of the building process from the land acquisition to building completion. In the initial stages we assist the Land department with the investigation and acquisition of potential land and then are responsible for the creation of the design packages. In general, as a department, we are responsible for managing workload and consultants as well as ensuring all work stays within the budget. The Technical department is also responsible as the main liaison between key members of the project team, including all internal departments, local authority, NHBC and consultants.

What do you do on a day-to-day basis?

As a graduate trainee I am responsible on a day-to-day basis of assisting with the technical processes such as drawing reviews, meetings, site visits and consultants meeting. As a graduate we aim to shadow a senior member of the team so a strong understanding of the technical functions can be established and used to run our own independent projects in the future.

What do you like about what you do?

What I like best is the diversity of the role. There are so many different things to get involved with and learn about. I feel like every day is a school day when I come into the office. Every job is different which means you are always working on different material and keeping things interesting every day.

Why did you choose this career?

I chose this career due to my interest in buildings and construction. The reason I chose Technical over other roles within the housebuilding sector is the challenge that is involved in delivering all requirements within the time frames they are needed.

What qualifications did you need to get this job?

A degree in a construction related field. I have a BSc Honours degree in Architectural design and technology.

Is there any particular advice you would give to someone looking for a career in your area of work?

I would advise someone looking for a career in the construction industry to get some work experience in that field of work during your studies or on a summer break. I took a sandwich degree that included a year out of university between my second and third year where I gained invaluable experience working for a housebuilder. Before I started I wasn’t really sure what was fully involved or whether it would be right for me. I left after the year had ended with a good idea of what was required and where I wanted to go when I finished my degree. It really helped clarify my career path for me.
