About my job

What does your department do?

My Department is a mix of design and engineering. The designers, which I am currently training for, designs layouts of new housing estates and submit to the planning council of the relevant area. The technical co-ordinators deals with any issues on site along with any site applications. The engineers deal with the ground and pipework’s. They ensure that foundations, ground levels and any services are put into place.

What do you do on a day-to-day basis?

Previously, I did not really have a typical day. Every day is different because of the various work to be done. Some days it is site visits, others its layout design or sitting with the engineers and understanding their job roles. Sometimes my mornings will start by continuing of where I left off the previous work day.

Now I am currently focusing on the designs and helping putting in applications for new and existing sites. Most of the time I am given a list of drawings that need to be completed, for a certain site, so an application can be put together. Otherwise I am completing bits and pieces for other people within the department.

What do you like about what you do?

I enjoy going out on site and experiencing of what is happening outside of the office because it help me understand more of how the aspect of the design is created on site. I find all of the job roles challenging when it is new to me but once my colleagues have explained and shown me what is what then it becomes clearer.

Why did you choose this career?

I joined Redrow in August 2013. I have always been into construction and I was looking for available places to take me on. I have heard of the opportunity from the careers advisor from my high school.

What qualifications did you need to get this job?

When I started Redrow, I just finished my GCSE Exams and a believe that the company was looking at a minimum of 5 ‘C’ grades.

Is there any particular advice you would give to someone looking for a career in your area of work?

If someone enjoys art design, mathematics and are interested in the construction environment then this area of department is definitely for them.
